The first settlers in the late 1700s chose to come south through the gap, rather than the more common approach from the Carolina coast. Residents in Deep Gap between Cliffield and McCraw Mountains used trees as drag brakes on steep roads to keep stagecoaches from running away. Life’s easier now, but our pioneer spirit lives on.
